How to Teach Reading Standards in Chinese Immersion Classrooms?

 
 

In the United States, most schools follow the Common Core Standards or the Next Generation Standards for English Language Arts and Math education in K-12 classrooms.

One challenge Chinese teachers have been facing for years is the lack of teaching and learning resources for Chinese language education. Every time my school switched to a new curriculum, our Spanish dual language classrooms always got all the materials in Spanish, but… the Chinese teachers weren’t so lucky.

In this article, we’re excited to share with you some reading resources we created to meet the same standards in Chinese Language Arts, and we hope you can find them useful for your Chinese immersion classroom.

 

First, we looked at the Next Generation Standards across K-2 carefully and gathered all the priority reading strategies and skills.

The Table of Contents on the right shows what standards are covered.

Then, we designed a Chinese anchor chart for each strategy.

Lastly, we created graphic organizers as scaffolds to help our Chinese learners organize information and construct ideas.

In our Chinese immersion classroom, we use a variety of authentic books and teacher-created texts to engage students, helping them enjoy reading while also strengthening their reading comprehension skills. We recommend using Chinese read aloud books for whole-class instruction, and then give students Leveled Passages for independent practice.
